So time gets 'stuck' at 5:02 pm on the 22nd April 2011 and all of history tries to play out at the same time leading to things getting very mixed up, but Amy Pond is on the case and looking pretty cool with an eyepatch at the same time. She remembers who the Doctor is in this mixed up reality (due to the crack in time from her bedroom wall) and is in control, looking like a kick ass ginger Daryl Hannah from Kill Bill, shooting the Silence to save Rory and coldly eliminating Madame Kovarian. She's ticking all the boxes.
The eyepatches are of course (seems so simple now we know) eyedrives which act as external memory and help retain your knowledge of what the Silence actually are and look like. The slow leaking of publicity photos of various members of the cast wearing these eyepatches (previously only Madame Kovarian had only been seen wearing one) was excellent as it stirred up the 'what is going on level' even more, had River Song turned to the dark side even more than her childhood training had infused? So there where more eyepatches on show in this last episode than the whole of the third episode 'The Curse of the Black Spot' which had pirates in it, and of course another merchandising boom for figures now with eyepatches stuck on.
