WIN Dr Whoops!

I've spent part of the last week tidying and cleaning up the upper level of my house. The 'spare' room upstairs needed clearing out of all the clutter and boxes that got stored there as its being turned into my daughters bedroom and as most of the clutter was over spill from my studio it meant I had to sort out my studio. I've worked with rather large piles of 'stuff' surrounding my art board and computer for about five years, so tidying up has meant I've unearthed many a lost item.

One of the lost items was this ink sketch which I had assumed I had sold at the comic convention Thought Bubble in Leeds last year but it turned out I had slowly been rolling the wheels of my chair over it each time I sat down at the board. So Tom has become the Timelord Dr Whoops :) He's not completely ruined but I certainly cannot expect to sell it to someone... so who wants Tom?

For the next week I'll run a mini competition to win this crumpled sketch. To enter you need be a 'follower' of the blog (just hit that follow button) and leave a comment to this post stating your favourite Tom Baker moment. All entries by midnight on the 5th September. I'll get the wife to randomly pick the winner. Please make sure you have a contact email either in your comment or your profile.

EDIT: If you are a new follower to the blog and enter this competition make sure that if your profile name isn't the same as your real name that you let me know in the message who you are. I've had entries that don't match with new followers so its all a bit confusing :)

My favorite Tom Baker moment is in Seeds of Doom, where the Doctor introduces Sarah Jane. Just his toothy smile as, under gunpoint, he says:

"Have you met Miss Smith? She's my best friend."

"Is she?" The villain comments, threatening, "And so beautifully intact, I see."

Of course, Sarah Jane has been with the Doctor long enough to handle capture with a sense of humor.

"I try my best," she quips, "Under the circumstances."

The Doctor then proceeds to introduce the villain to his own henchman, asking, "And this is Mr. Skorby--I don't know his first name--and these two..."

"Yes, thank you Doctor, we are acquainted." The villain interrupts.

I just loved when the 4th Doctor was able to make even the most deadly moment something I was equally laughing at and found somewhat sweet--to the point where I forgot the danger for a moment.

How can I pick my favourite fourth Dr moment? Anytime he offers someone a jellybaby I think.

My favourite is also from 'The Seeds Of Doom'. Sarah Jane's arm is being held just as the second Krynoid pod is about to germinate and shoot out a tendril to infect our favourite companion. The doctor crashes through a skylight to save the day.

Harrison Chase to The Doctor- "What do you do for an encore?"

The Doctor - "I win"

I think that serial probably has the best dialogue per episode rate than any other.

Favorite Tom Baker moment/quote:

From the Face of Evil:
"You know the very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. They don't alter their views to fit the facts. They alter the facts to fit their views. Which can be uncomfortable..if you happen to be one of the facts that needs altering."

The longer I live, the more true that quote seems to me.

it's impossible to pick just one!!! but if i have to choose, it'd be City of Death, which is full of great 4th Doctor(& Romana) moments. my favorite part of their conversation has to be this exchange though:

"Romana: What year is this?"

"The Doctor: Oh, well... well, it's 1979, actually. More of a table wine, shall we say? Ha! A randomizer is a useful device, but it lacks true discrimination. Shall we sip it and see?"

"Romana: Oh, I'd be delighted. Should we take the lift or fly?"

"The Doctor: Let's not be ostentatious."

"Romana: All right, let's fly, then."

"The Doctor: That would look silly. We'll take the lift, come on."

Never fails to make me laugh! :)

"I heard a cry"
"That was me"
"I heard a cry"
"That was me"
"I heard a cry"
"That was meee"

Just always remember it, first Tom Baker story I saw, on VHS.

It's very sinister and hypnotic.

Honestly my favourite Tom Baker moment is his first one. After regeneration there is always a wonderment as a fan. "Is this guy going to be good?" Well it is my opinion that he sold me on Tom Baker as the Doctor right there right then.

My favorite Baker moment has to be when my mom first introduced me to the show.
1979 and PBS were showing "Genesis of the Daleks".
I seriously thought the show was weird but I hung on. I hung on to the show all these years.
My mom didn't. She passed on cancer in my arms 5 years ago at 64.
I help to take care of my dad now but he never really got the british humor thing.
So whenever I watch Who I still watch it with my mom...in spirit anyways.

My favourite moment is simply when Tom lifts up part of the floor in Genesis of the Daleks, and appears out of the bottom. That grin of his always makes my day!

How to pick just one.

Face of Evil: "I'll kill him with this deadly Jelly Baby."

or an early one where he says "What's the point of being grown up if you can't act childish once in a while."

And in The Talons of Weng-Chiang where he is doing the Holmes thing sort of foreshadowing his later playing Sherlock Holmes - missed the scarf, but loved the idea of him as Holmes.

I'm watching "The Deadly Assassin" right now. It's a fabulous episode - the Master, the Matrix, the Time Lords, and Tom at his best. I love the line, "I can feel my hair curling, and that can mean either that it's going to rain… or that I'm on to something."

My favorite moment is in Talons of Weng Chiang when Leela appears shyly in a beautiful Victorian dress. Tom beams at her proudly and says, "We're going to the theatre, and if you are very good, I'll buy you an orange."
Leela smiles warmly.
To this day, this males me smile and get slightly misty

The circumstances for me becoming a WhoHead were ideal when at ten I started watching the Key to Time story arc. Without Tom Baker, I'm not certain this would have been possible. From the first episode, his interactions with Romana held my attention hostage. He managed to be funny, charming, and completely at ease with his character.

I will never forget the ending of the story arc when the key to time is assembles as he feigns momentarily into a lust for its power. As Romana asks if he's alright, he breaks a smirk of seriousness segueing into a candid assessment of the situation. "Of course I'm all right, but suppose I wasn't alright." Here he managed to inspire me simultaneously with humor, awe, and terror all at once.

Tom crashed onto our screens on the 28th December 1974 in episode one of Robot. Unlike the other Doctors he picked out his new outfit and started running. He never stopped. he was the most human of all the doctors, vacations, art museums or just playing chess with k-9. How can you pick just 1 favorite scene. With Tom as the doctor, they were all my favorites!

My favourite Tom moment?
Chasing him down Charing Cross Rd in London when I saw him out of the window of the shop I worked in.
All I had for him to sign was a copy of "The Dying Days"...a Paul McGann novel.
Still..that must be worth a bit now ;)

My favorite Fourth Doctor moment(s) were when he would pull all kinds of random stuff out of his pockets (including Jelly Babies, of course). A particularly funny one is in the first episode of "Genesis of the Daleks"
